CINDY AITKEN
Born and raised on Vancouver Island and having returned to this very special place after pursuing my career on the Mainland, I now spend my time dreaming up ways of expressing my love of nature through art.
I have been an arts and crafts person ever since I can remember. My career path led me to a bronze foundry where I was able to explore my love of sculpting. It was there that I refined my skills as a sculptor and learned how to create castings in a variety of materials and finishes. I also learned how hand waxed patinas could allow me to express myself with colour and texture, and give each piece a unique finish. From there, I ventured into multi-media, highlighting my castings in refinished frames, with handmade paper, pressed leaves, flowers and anything else that might catch my eye.
From whimsical to realism, I love the fact that as an artist I can go where my imagination takes me. As an avid gardener, I started making solar lanterns and driftwood suncatchers for myself. The lanterns are made with recycled lighting fixtures and K9 crystals.
The contrast of elegant chandeliers hanging in my otherwise rustic garden adds a touch of romance and tranquility both day and night. What started as just a few lanterns and suncatchers for my own garden has turned into a favourite with my clients who share the same vision for their garden that I do. Although sculpting and hand waxed finishes are my first passion, the world of multi-media and recycled materials has opened up so many possibilities and my work reflects that.
I love what I do and I hope each piece that I sell finds a special place in the heart and home of it’s new owner.
